Prosperity Isn’t A Bad Word…

You know, the enemy has done a good job of perverting many Christian’s views on the blessings of God when it comes to prosperity. So often, the moment someone says “prosperity” people’s defenses go up. They think it’s only about money and material things. And they reject the teaching altogether. But to only focus on money and “stuff” is low level thinking. The blessings of God are so much more than that. And prosperity is really a message of faith and obedience. Not money.

Here’s my disclaimer: I pass zero judgment on anyone who has a different understanding of God’s holy word. In this life, I’m only called to show love!!

Now that my disclaimer is out of the way, here’s what I see happening. People who identify themselves as Christians do so because we love God, we’ve accepted Jesus as our Lord and Savior and we follow the teachings of Christ. So generally speaking, our hearts are pure in our intentions when it comes to serving God. But a lot of us are seemingly more rooted in doctrine than we are in our actual relationships with God. And there are some doctrines that teach against prosperity. I think it’s because prosperity is sometimes viewed as strictly about materialism, greed, and a “gimme gimme gimme” attitude toward God.

But I’ve been doing quite a bit of studying on this topic lately, primarily because God has given me many desires in my heart and I must be sure that my prayers to God are in alignment with His Word. And I’m excited to tell you, that prosperity is ABSOLUTELY in alignment with scripture. Maybe it’s not in alignment with certain doctrines, but thankfully, we don’t serve doctrines. We serve God.

My personal belief is that the “name it and claim it” style of teaching, without true understanding of the Word, is what has soured people on prosperity and given it a bad wrap. Seeing preachers drive fancy cars and live a lavish lifestyle on the backs of a few faithful members who are scraping together bill money is enough to turn anyone away from “prosperity” and in some cases Christianity altogether.

So, please indulge me for just a moment, and allow me to share some things that God says about living a prosperous lifestyle.

First, let’s look at the definition of “Prosperous”. It means, “marked by success or economic well-being”, “enjoying vigorous and healthy growth”,

Synonyms for Prosperous – booming, flourishing, golden, healthy, lush, successful, thriving

Antonyms for Prosperous – depressed, unsuccessful

Second, we must Establish Within Ourselves That God Cannot Lie! I say this often, because it truly is the basis for our faith and confidence in God and the power of His Living Word in our lives.

Third, we must understand what prosperity is all about. God wants to prosper us spiritually, physically, and financially. There are tons of scriptures that speak to this. In your private time, check out some of the others. It will be an encouragement to you!

3 John 1:2 “Beloved, I pray that in all respects you may prosper and be in good health, just as your soul prospers

Jeremiah 29: 11-13 “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.”

Think about Job. He was attacked spiritually, physically, and financially, and God restored him in EVERY AREA. So much so, that he left an inheritance for his children’s, children’s, children’s, children. (4 generations)

Job 8:5-7

“But if you will seek God earnestly and plead with the Almighty, if you are pure and upright, even now he will rouse himself on your behalf and restore you to your prosperous state. Your beginnings will seem humble, so prosperous will your future be.”

God then fulfills His promise to Job in Job 42:12-17 “The Lord blessed the latter part of Job’s life more than the former part. He had fourteen thousand sheep, six thousand camels, a thousand yoke of oxen and a thousand donkeys. And he also had seven sons and three daughters. The first daughter he named Jemimah, the second Keziah and the third Keren-Happuch. Nowhere in all the land were there found women as beautiful as Job’s daughters, and their father granted them an inheritance along with their brothers. After this, Job lived a hundred and forty years; he saw his children and their children to the fourth generation. And so Job died, an old man and full of years.”

And then there’s the Holy Grail of blessings, Deuteronomy 28:1-14 “Now it shall be, if you diligently obey the LORD your God, being careful to do all His commandments which I command you today, the LORD your God will set you high above all the nations of the earth. “All these blessings will come upon you and overtake you if you obey the LORD your God. “Blessed shall you be in the city, and blessed shall you be in the country. “Blessed shall be the offspring of your body and the produce of your ground and the offspring of your beasts, the increase of your herd and the young of your flock. “Blessed shall be your basket and your kneading bowl. “Blessed shall you be when you come in, and blessed shall you be when you go out. “The LORD shall cause your enemies who rise up against you to be defeated before you; they will come out against you one way and will flee before you seven ways. “The LORD will command the blessing upon you in your barns and in all that you put your hand to, and He will bless you in the land which the LORD your God gives you. “The LORD will establish you as a holy people to Himself, as He swore to you, if you keep the commandments of the LORD your God and walk in His ways. “So all the peoples of the earth will see that you are called by the name of the LORD, and they will be afraid of you. “The LORD will make you abound in prosperity, in the offspring of your body and in the offspring of your beast and in the produce of your ground, in the land which the LORD swore to your fathers to give you. “The LORD will open for you His good storehouse, the heavens, to give rain to your land in its season and to bless all the work of your hand; and you shall lend to many nations, but you shall not borrow. “The LORD will make you the head and not the tail, and you only will be above, and you will not be underneath, if you listen to the commandments of the LORD your God, which I charge you today, to observe them carefully, and do not turn aside from any of the words which I command you today, to the right or to the left, to go after other gods to serve them.

Why would anyone want to deny and speak against the fact that when we are obedient and faithful to God, He wants us to have lives that are:

– booming, flourishing, golden, healthy, lush, successful, thriving –

Because the alternative is a life that’s:

– depressed, unsuccessful –

We serve a God Who lives in Heaven. Have you read what Heaven looks like? Read Revelations 21, or check out my blog 10 Percent Covers Your 90, where I describe what God says is in Heaven. He tells us He will open up the windows of Heaven and pour blessings that we can’t even hold ’em all!! That sure doesn’t sound depressing to me! Sounds like an overflow of His goodness. An overflow that I can share with others!

So, here’s the thing. If the spoils of the wicked are laid up for the just (and we’re the just) and if you trusted God enough to give Him your life, then why not trust Him enough to prosper your life? I’m just sayin’

Be Blessed and Have a Fantastic Day!
