A Beautiful Psalm

One of my very favorite passages of Scripture in the Living Word, is Psalm 1:1-3

1 Blessed (happy, fortunate, prosperous, and enviable) is the man who walks and lives not in the counsel of the ungodly [following their advice, their plans and purposes], nor stands [submissive and inactive] in the path where sinners walk, nor sits down [to relax and rest] where the scornful [and the mockers] gather.

2 But his delight and desire are in the law of the Lord, and on His law (the precepts, the instructions, the teachings of God) he habitually meditates (ponders and studies) by day and by night.

3 And he shall be like a tree firmly planted [and tended] by the streams of water, ready to bring forth its fruit in its season; its leaf also shall not fade or wither; and everything he does shall prosper [and come to maturity].

I love this passage because it’s such a beautiful promise. I’ve been listening to ministers come under fire for their “name it and claim it” prosperity teaching. But God settled it for me, once and for all. God is a God with conditional promises. I can’t get to verse 3 without my obedience to verses 1 & 2.

A “name it and claim it” teaching will mislead a babe in the Word and have them trying to lay claim to promises that may not come to pass because their hearts aren’t right. I am convinced that God desires me to prosper. He tells me that too many times in His Living Word for me to believe otherwise. So I believe it. As evidence that He wants me to be prosperous, check out my post, 15 Promises and Blessings of God.

I also know He has expectations of me. Specifically, in these verses, God tells me that I am to stay away from ungodly advice and I am not to get comfortable hanging around people who are comfortable sinning. Instead, I am to enjoy studying and meditating on God’s Word. Continually. Just as He tells me in John 15:5, “I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing.

To abide means to live continually. Make God where we live and not just stop by for a few hours once or twice a week.

And here’s the thing. If I’m doing verses 1 & 2, then I reap the reward of verse 3. But if I’m doing verses 1 & 2, then verse 3 is no longer my goal. It’s a promise and I get to experience it because I’ve Established Within Myself That God Cannot Lie. So if He says I can have verse 3, then He’ll give me verse 3. And I’m thankful for verse 3.

But spending time with God becomes my goal. And spending time with God is awesome!! I can’t study and meditate without our time together turning into an authentic relationship. I get the privilege to fellowship with Him and be used by Hm to share Jesus with others. Yes, I want my reward in verse 3, but if the reward was my initial motivation, it will be downgraded to just a wonderful blessing. The true joy is my relationship with God.

Be wary of two kinds of people. 1) People who want you to treat God like a genie whose belly you can rub and get stuff. That’s not how God operates and that mindset is young and insulting. 2) People who want you to feel bad about desiring a prosperous life. Study the Living Word for yourself and read all the places where God specifically tells you He wants to bless you. Have you read what Heaven looks like? God is very descriptive of Heaven in Revelation. If that doesn’t let you know that He wants you to prosper, then I don’t know what will!

In this post, I list just some of the opulence of Heaven.

Be Blessed and Have a Fantastic Day!
