Did you know there are four kinds of giving? And if you can understand the purpose of each kind of giving, then you can transform your economic life!
Tithes, First Fruits, Alms, and Seed
Tithes: is motivated by obedience and connects us to the blessing. What’s the blessing you may ask? It’s in Gen 1:28And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth. Fruitful – always producing; Multiply – always increasing; Replenish – always filling and refilling; Subdue – control over your environment. It’s your tithes that rebukes the devourer. Mal 3:10-11 Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it. And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, saith the LORD of hosts.
First Fruits: motivated by generosity. When we give our first fruits, we are saying to God that we are not in love with money. We are showing gratitude to God for the extra blessing He has given us. For example, if you get a raise on your job of $50, the first check that has your raise should be given away. You’ll find over 25 references to first fruits in the Living Word of God (aka, the Bible).Proverbs 3:9-10 Honor the LORD with thy substance, and with the first fruits of all thine increase. So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine.
Alms: motivated by compassion and sympathy. Alms is the only giving of the four that isn’t given to God. It’s given to mankind. And it’s given in secrecy to protect people’s dignity in their crisis. And when you give in secret to those in need, God will reward you openly. Matt 6:1-4 Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven. Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth: That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.
Seed: motivated by faith and reward. Seed is also called offering and it’s the fourth and final kind of giving. It’s the only way the 30/60/100 fold harvest is created. And it starts at 11% (because the first 10% is your tithe). Your seed is the surest way to stop poverty in your life. When you sow your seed, put it in the fertile soil for it to accomplish the impossible in your life. Mark 4:8 And other fell on good ground, and did yield fruit that sprang up and increased; and brought forth, some thirty, and some sixty, and some an hundred.
When you give, be clear. Your 10% is your tithe, not your alms. And when you give alms, be quiet about it. It’s not about telling others what you’ve done when you give first fruits, it’s only done once. If you get a raise, you don’t have to always give up your increase. It’s just the 1st time you receive it. And sow your seed on good ground.
If you’re looking to expand your economic life, then try these four ways of giving. If you give and you’re still struggling, then examine your giving.
I’m still working on being deliberate in these four types of giving. I’m having to relearn some of my former ways of thinking, but it’s a fun journey. And I’m definitely seeing a positive impact in my life!
