I’m currently in a book club and we’re reading Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill. It’s an awesome book for anyone who desires to live out loud and live the desires that have been placed in their hearts. Our discussion last night was on Imagination. And Hill shared some things that I have to share with you.
“The imagination is literally the workshop wherein are fashioned all plans created by man. The impulse, the desire, is given shape, form, and action through the aid of the imagination faculty of the mind. It has been said that man can create anything which he can imagine.”
I did a search of the word imagination in the Bible and in almost everyone of the 20 instances where it came up it was in reference to the imagination of man’s evil heart. Gen 6:5 – And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
2 Cor. 10:5 – Casting down imaginations and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.
At first blush, you’d think that imagination was evil, but no, it’s something that must be controlled. Exercised with a heart for God. Obedient to God. Because our imaginations are powerful and if left unchecked we will create things that are contrary to the life God wants for us.
Ps. 37:4 – Delight thyself in the Lord and do good; and He shall give thee the desires of thine heart.
I see this verse as God placing His desires for our lives within us. And not us desiring things because of our flesh and expecting God to give them to us. The latter way of thinking could lead us down the road of evil imaginations.
But if we are enjoying our lives in God and He has placed desires in our hearts, then we are to use our imaginations to bring it to reality. Remember, Hill said, “The imagination is literally the workshop wherein are fashioned all plans created by man. The impulse, the desire, is given shape, form, and action through the aid of the imagination faculty of the mind.” And the desire is given by God. And God said in Jer 1:12 that He watches over His word to perform it.
So, when you’ve been spending time with God and an “idea” pops into your head, know that He just placed a desire inside your heart. And as you are meditating on that idea and a plan to bring it to light starts to take shape, that is you exercising your imagination muscle and creating a way to bring that idea to life. And because God watches over His Word to perform it, He’s watching over that idea that He gave you.
Move forward with confidence, even when what you’re imagining seems impossible or outrageously big. Because it all started with a desire from God.
Be Blessed and Have a Fantastic Day!
