Can You Remember Something You Never Knew?

July 19, 2017

The Living Word says that the Holy Spirit… will teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. (John 14:26)

That’s a beautiful promise.  But as I was reading it, one part in particular jumped out at me.  “Bring all things to your remembrance.”  How can I remember something I never knew?  God has a lot of wonderful promises in His LivingWord.  But the only way I know them is if I get in the Living Word and find them.  And deeper than that, I must establish within myself that God cannot lie.  So that when I hear and read the Living Word, I can receive it.  I’ve been studying the Word with the assistance of an amazing, amazing book by Gloria Copeland, To Know Him.  In it, I learned some promises through Scripture.  I’ll share a few of them here.  Maybe these are Scriptures you already knew.  If so, remind yourself of the beauty of the words.  And maybe some of them, you never knew.  If so, rejoice in the fact that you know them now.  And you’re continually establishing within yourself that God cannot lie.   With that knowledge you know that His Living Word is true when He says:

  • God Is love – “Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love” (1 John 4:8)

  • Love Never Fails – “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails…” (1 Cor 13:3-8a).  Because God is love, you when you read this Scripture, you could substitute “God” for “Love”.  The Scripture will come to light in a new and exciting way.

  • God is Gracious and Compassionate -“They celebrate your abundant goodness and joyfully sing of your righteousness. The Lord is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in love.” (Ps 145:7-8)  Graciousmeans “disposed to show favors” and Compassionate means “an eager yearning to do good”.  Now read the Scripture, and insert the meaning of gracious and compassionate.   The Lord is good to all, and His tender mercies are over all His works.

  • We Can Love Like God – “And so we know and rely on the love God has for us.  God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them. This is how love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment: In this world we are like Jesus.” (1 John 4:16-17)

  • Daily Communion With God, Produces Great Results In Our Lives – “Remain in Me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in Me. “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in Me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” (John 15:4-5)

These are just a handful of the gems that are shared in the book, To Know Him.  I can tell you, from personal experience, that understanding & internalizing the truths written has transformed my life.

Please understand me though.  God is not a genie or Aladdin.  We don’t get to rub His lamp and He appears to grant us all our wishes.  No, that would be completely missing the point.  Yes, we all have needs.  And some needs are more immediate than others.  And His Living Word says He will meet our needs according to what He has (not according to what we have).  And He allows us to rest in that truth.  But more than that, He wants us to talk to Him.  Spend time with Him.  Love Him.  Appreciate Who He Is, just because we love Him.  He’s not a magic pill, “take 2 Scriptures and call me in the morning”.  No, He is very much an “If you.. then I…” God.  “Monica, if you abide in me, then I will…”  As we root ourselves deeper in God, our focus will turn away from the “…then I” and we’ll find ourselves delighting in the “If you…”

We’ll give the Holy Spirit something to work with.  He’ll be able to bring to our remembrance what we need for our situations.

Be Blessed and Have a Fantastic Day!

Monica
