If you’ve been following my posts, then you know that I’m learning how to Establish Within Myself That God Cannot Lie. And this morning, I wondered what does God say about His blessings for me. What are His promises to me?
I’m rewiring my thinking so that I can believe in my spirit everything that He says. So I challenged myself to search the Word and find 15 scriptures that speak of God’s promises to bless me.
To start, I wanted to define the actual word. As Christians we hear the word “blessing’ and say the word ‘blessing’ all the time, but what does it mean?
Webster defines blessing as:
to make (something or someone) holy by saying a special prayer
to ask God to care for and protect (someone or something)
to provide (a person, place, etc.) with something good or desirable
to hallow or consecrate by religious rite or word
to invoke divine care for
praise, glorify, protect, preserve, approve, endow, favor
to confer prosperity or happiness upon
The Bible is our instruction manual. It’s not like the instruction manual that you get with your new salad crisper. You throw that manual away. You don’t need to read how to operate a salad crisper because it’s self-explanatory. And you don’t put it away for safe keeping, like you do with the new vacuum you got and pull it out only when you have a problem that you can’t fix with the knowledge you already have. No, the Living Word of God needs to be before our faces daily. We need it for life. If we are to live lives of victory, then we have to dig into it. Not throw it away or pull it out in an emergency.
Sidenote: I am not into “name it and claim it”. There are consequences to disobedience. When you read the surrounding scriptures, to these 15 blessings, you’ll see that not far away is usually a caution of what happens if you choose to walk in disobedience. You’ll also see that the blessings belong to you IF you do something that God requires first.
Here are the 15 passages of scripture. Enjoy!!
(1 Peter 3:8-12) 8To sum up, all of you be harmonious, sympathetic, brotherly, kindhearted, and humble in spirit;9not returning evil for evil or insult for insult, but giving a blessing instead; for you were called for the very purpose that you might inherit a blessing. 10For “THE ONE WHO DESIRES LIFE, TO LOVE AND SEE GOOD DAYS, MUST KEEP HIS TONGUE FROM EVIL AND HIS LIPS FROM SPEAKING DECEIT 11“HE MUST TURN AWAY FROM EVIL AND DO GOOD; HE MUST SEEK PEACE AND PURSUE IT.12“FOR THE EYES OF THE LORD ARE TOWARD THE RIGHTEOUS AND HIS EARS ATTEND TO THEIR PRAYER, BUT THE FACE OF THE LORD IS AGAINST THOSE WHO DO EVIL.”
(Ezekiel 34:25-31) 25“I will make a covenant of peace with them and eliminate harmful beasts from the land so that they may live securely in the wilderness and sleep in the woods. 26“I will make them and the places around My hill a blessing. And I will cause showers to come down in their season; they will be showers of blessing. 27“Also the tree of the field will yield its fruit and the earth will yield its increase, and they will be secure on their land. Then they will know that I am the LORD, when I have broken the bars of their yoke and have delivered them from the hand of those who enslaved them. 28“They will no longer be a prey to the nations, and the beasts of the earth will not devour them; but they will live securely, and no one will make them afraid. 29“I will establish for them a renowned planting place, and they will not again be victims of famine in the land, and they will not endure the insults of the nations anymore. 30“Then they will know that I, the LORD their God, am with them, and that they, the house of Israel, are My people,” declares the Lord GOD. 31“As for you, My sheep, the sheep of My pasture, you are men, and I am your God,” declares the Lord GOD
(Gen 49:24-25) 24But his bow remained firm, And his arms were agile, From the hands of the Mighty One of Jacob (From there is the Shepherd, the Stone of Israel), 25From the God of your father who helps you, And by the Almighty who blesses you With blessings of heaven above, Blessings of the deep that lies beneath, Blessings of the breasts and of the womb.
(Deuteronomy 28:1-14) This is one of my personal favorites, and when I read it, I add my name and I add what I want in my life to be blessed. I’m specific. 1“Now it shall be, if you diligently obey the LORD your God, being careful to do all His commandments which I command you today, the LORD your God will set you high above all the nations of the earth. 2“All these blessings will come upon you and overtake you if you obey the LORD your God 3“Blessedshall you be in the city, and blessed shall you be in the country 4“Blessed shall be the offspring of your body and the produce of your ground and the offspring of your beasts, the increase of your herd and the young of your flock 5“Blessed shall be your basket and your kneading bowl 6“Blessed shall you be when you come in, and blessed shallyou be when you go out 7“The LORD shall cause your enemies who rise up against you to be defeated before you; they will come out against you one way and will flee before you seven ways. 8“The LORD will command the blessingupon you in your barns and in all that you put your hand to, and He will bless you in the land which the LORD your God gives you. 9“The LORD will establish you as a holy people to Himself, as He swore to you, if you keep the commandments of the LORD your God and walk in His ways. 10“So all the peoples of the earth will see that you are called by the name of the LORD, and they will be afraid of you. 11“The LORD will make you abound in prosperity, in the offspring of your body and in the offspring of your beast and in the produce of your ground, in the land which the LORD swore to your fathers to give you. 12“The LORD will open for you His good storehouse, the heavens, to give rain to your land in its season and to bless all the work of your hand; and you shall lend to many nations, but you shall not borrow. 13“The LORD will make you the head and not the tail, and you only will be above, and you will not be underneath, if you listen to the commandments of the LORD your God, which I charge you today, to observe them carefully, 14and do not turn aside from any of the words which I command you today, to the right or to the left, to go after other gods to serve them.
